Description
This event is for MBC members to build (measure, cut, sand, drill, assemble, and stain) all of the components (headboards/footboards, side rails, safety rails, and slats) for 30 beds that will bless children in the Waco community.
Purpose
MBC members will have the opportunity to build all of the components necessary to complete 30 beds that will be delivered to kids (ages 3-17) in the greater Waco community at a later date who are sleeping on the floor or other similarly poor conditions. Sleep affects a child's health, school work, learning, and their ability even to have self-confidence. When a child gets a good night's sleep, it does more than just allow them to wake up rested and be in a good posture for school; having a bed also provides a sense of safety and security and gives them ownership of even one small space. These beds will help restore dignity not only to the children, but to the parents who are struggling to provide for them.
Role
We make the beds from "scratch" using 2"x6", 2"x4", and 1"x4" lumber. It is measured, cut on miter saws, sanded, drilled, and then assembled into headboards/footboards, side rails, slats that will sit on the side rails and support the mattress, and safety rails that will be
installed on upper beds of a bunkbed set. All of these components (except the slats) are also dip-stained in a mixture of steel wool dissolved in vinegar; this provides a reddish-brown tint to the wood and the residual vinegar that penetrates into the wood helps repel insects such as bed bugs. NO EXPERIENCE WITH POWER TOOLS IS NEEDED! We provide training on every aspect of the build - only work in areas where you feel comfortable.
